Prent Corporation’s 2015 WorldStar winning medical package has just been named a Sustainable Packaging Award Silver Winner by the World Packaging Organization (WPO). It was the only medical package given a Sustainability Award. This is Prent's 15th WorldStar Award in the past 22 years.
The WorldStar Award is the pre-eminent international award in packaging. Awards are only presented to those packages which, having already won recognition in a national competition, are compared by an expert panel of judges to similar packages from around the world. Awards are based on the judges' consensus that a package is superior in its own right and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison.
Prent’s 2015 WorldStar winner (the Verrata diagnostic coronary guide wire package created for Volcano Corporation) incorporates multiple, innovative features designed to save resources for the medical device company, hospitals and the environment.
Important sustainable characteristics built into the Volcano package include:
• It’s made from fully recyclable PETG material.
• Over 99% of the trim scrap and excess material used in production is re-ground and supplied for use in new product.
• The tray footprint was intentionally designed to be smaller than the overall size of the product in order to reduce the amount of plastic used.
• Features in the tray which secure and organize the product replace tape and other materials that the used in the previous package, thus reducing the potential waste associated with the package.
